In "The Judge," Hank Palmer (played by Robert Downey Jr.), a successful defense attorney in Chicago, reluctantly returns to his small hometown in Indiana for his mother's funeral. Estranged from his family, particularly his father Judge Joseph Palmer (played by Robert Duvall), Hank believes he can quickly attend the funeral and return to his busy city life. However, things take a dramatic turn as Judge Palmer, known for his tough and relentless judgments, becomes the prime suspect in a hit-and-run accident that has resulted in a death.

While visiting his father, Hank reconnects with his two brothers, Glen (played by Vincent D'Onofrio), an older brother desperate to save his family's farm, and Dale (played by Jeremy Strong), a mentally-challenged younger brother who videotapes everything around him.
