"A Resistance" is a South Korean historical drama film released in 2019, directed by Joe Min-ho. Set during the time of Japanese colonial rule in Korea, the movie portrays the inspiring and tragic life story of YU Gwan-sun, a young female activist who played a significant role in the Korean independence movement.

The film begins by introducing YU Gwan-sun as a progressive and passionate young woman attending a girls' school in early 20th century Korea. When news of the March 1st Movement, a peaceful protest demanding independence from Japan, reaches her school, YU becomes deeply moved and motivated to join the cause. Encouraged by her teacher and fellow students, she becomes one of the main organizers of the movement.

Soon after, YU and her friends participate in a large demonstration in Seoul, where they are met with brutal violence and repression from the Japanese authorities. Many protestors are arrested, including YU. The film then shifts its focus to her experience in prison, where she refuses to give up her fight for independence.

Inside the prison walls, YU Gwan-sun shows remarkable resilience and determination. She develops a close bond with her fellow inmates and manages to unite them in a secret resistance movement against their captors. Their small acts of defiance and resistance infuriate the Japanese security chief, who attempts to discover the leader behind it all.

The security chief uses manipulation and coercion to turn one of the inmates against YU. However, even during her torture, YU refuses to betray her cause or her friends. She endures the torment with unwavering strength.

In a surprising turn of events, YU Gwan-sun seems to give in to the Japanese authorities, pretending to comply with their demands while secretly planning another independence protest. Her act of submission is merely a ruse to gain the freedom to mobilize more people outside of prison.

Through her intelligence and determination, YU successfully spreads the call for independence beyond the prison walls. The film shows the growing movement gaining momentum throughout the streets of Korea, galvanizing more and more people to join. YU becomes a symbol of hope and resilience for the Korean people, inspiring them to fight for their freedom.

Despite her efforts, YU Gwan-sun's suffering is not yet over. The Japanese authorities eventually discover her involvement in the renewed protests, leading to her arrest once again. This time, the torture inflicted upon her is even more severe. However, YU remains steadfast till the end, refusing to succumb to her captors.

Tragically, YU Gwan-sun's story comes to a heartbreaking conclusion when she dies just two days before her scheduled release from prison. Nevertheless, her spirit and legacy live on, inspiring generations of Koreans to continue the fight for independence and sovereignty.

"A Resistance" pays tribute to YU Gwan-sun and her unwavering commitment to the Korean independence movement, highlighting the immense sacrifices and courage displayed by her and countless others during a dark and oppressive period in Korean history.
