In "The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel," Sonny Kapoor (played by Dev Patel) is the enthusiastic and ambitious owner of the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel in Jaipur, India. As the film begins, the hotel is a success with a majority of its rooms filled by British retirees.

With only one room available in the hotel, Sonny and his right-hand man, Muriel (played by Maggie Smith), are busy preparing for a visit from two potential investors. Sonny dreams of expanding his hotel empire by opening a second location. However, the investors, a young American named Guy (played by Richard Gere) and a British entrepreneur named Lavinia (played by Tamsin Greig), seem to have other intentions that make Sonny suspicious.

Meanwhile, the elderly residents of the hotel are navigating their own personal and romantic lives. Evelyn (played by Judi Dench) has taken a job and is forming a close bond with Douglas (played by Bill Nighy). Norman (played by Ronald Pickup) is continuing his antics with the ladies, especially with Carol (played by Diana Hardcastle). Madge (played by Celia Imrie) is torn between two suitors, while Jean (played by Penelope Wilton) reconciles her marriage with Douglas after temporarily leaving him.

As Sonny juggles his upcoming wedding to his girlfriend, Sunaina (played by Tina Desai), with the pressures of running the hotel and impressing the investors, he also forms a friendship with Guy. Sonny becomes increasingly paranoid about Guy's true intentions, suspecting that he may not be who he claims to be.

As the story unfolds, Sonny faces several challenges, including misunderstandings, cultural differences, and his own self-doubt. Sonny's mother, Mrs. Kapoor (played by Lillete Dubey), also plays a crucial role in guiding him through his difficulties.

In the end, all the characters find resolution and happiness, whether it is through love, personal growth, or reaching their goals. The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel celebrates the resilience of its characters and the joy that can come from embracing new opportunities, even in the later years of life.
