Never Rarely Sometimes Always is a coming-of-age drama directed by Eliza Hittman. The film follows Autumn (played by Sidney Flanigan), a seventeen-year-old girl living in rural Pennsylvania. Unbeknownst to her family, Autumn discovers that she is pregnant and decides to seek an abortion.

With the help of her cousin Skylar (played by Talia Ryder), Autumn embarks on a journey to New York City to find a clinic that can provide the medical help she needs. The girls scrape together money for bus tickets and embark on the trip without their families' knowledge or support.

Arriving in the city, Autumn and Skylar face numerous challenges. They struggle to navigate their way around the unfamiliar and intimidating urban landscape while dealing with the emotional and physical toll of the situation. The girls encounter difficult and uncomfortable situations, including encounters with shady individuals and a lack of guidance from the healthcare system.

Along the way, they meet Jasper (played by Théodore Pellerin), an older boy who tries to take advantage of their vulnerability. However, despite this, the girls continue to support each other and remain determined to find the help Autumn needs.

Autumn eventually undergoes the abortion procedure, and the film takes a raw and intimate approach in depicting her experience. A pivotal scene in the film is the "Never Rarely Sometimes Always" survey, which Autumn completes while speaking with a healthcare professional. This questionnaire forces her to confront deeply personal and emotional questions, further highlighting the film's exploration of reproductive rights and access to healthcare.

Throughout their journey, Autumn and Skylar develop a strong bond of friendship and resilience. The film portrays the realities faced by young women seeking reproductive healthcare and sheds light on the lack of resources and support available to them, especially in rural areas.

Never Rarely Sometimes Always offers a poignant and empathetic portrayal of the obstacles faced by young girls navigating their way through an unforgiving world while trying to exercise control over their own bodies and futures.
