The movie Gunga Din takes place in 19th century India when the British Empire was expanding its control over the region. Sergeant Archibald Cutter, Sergeant MacChesney, and Sergeant 'Boggie' Ballantine serve as part of a British army regiment stationed in India.

The story follows the adventures of this trio along with their loyal native water-bearer, Gunga Din. The soldiers see Gunga Din as a devoted friend and comrade, but also as a subordinate due to their racially biased views towards the native population.

During their stay in the Indian villages, they come across evidence of the long-suppressed Thuggee cult, a secret criminal organization known for ritualistic killings and robberies. Gunga Din, being a local, is aware of the Thuggee activities and secretly shares his knowledge with the sergeants.

While repairing a telegraph line deep in the Indian countryside, the soldiers accidentally stumble upon a hidden underground temple made entirely of gold. It is believed to be the secret headquarters of the Thuggees and a treasury of immense wealth. Greed takes over Cutter, who becomes obsessed with obtaining the treasure for himself.

However, their presence in the temple does not go unnoticed. The Thuggees capture Cutter, and the remaining sergeants realize they must rescue their friend before he falls victim to the cult's violent rites. With Gunga Din's help, they embark on a dangerous and thrilling mission to save Cutter from his captors.

As they journey through treacherous jungles, battle against Thuggee warriors, and navigate through ancient temples, the sergeants face numerous obstacles and life-threatening situations. Along the way, they gain a greater appreciation for Gunga Din's loyalty and bravery, transcending their preconceptions about him.

Ultimately, the sergeants successfully rescue Cutter and defeat the Thuggee cult. The treasure-filled temple ends up collapsing in a spectacular finale, burying the Thuggees' secrets forever.

Gunga Din serves as a heroic figure throughout the movie, sacrificing his life to save the lives of the sergeants as they make their daring escape. The sergeants, now realizing the true worth and noble nature of their water-bearer companion, pay him a tribute by reciting Rudyard Kipling's poem, "Gunga Din," acknowledging his unwavering loyalty and portraying him as a hero in his own right.

Gunga Din is a thrilling adventure film that explores themes of friendship, loyalty, and the dangers of unchecked greed. It blends action-packed sequences with elements of colonialism and the complexities of British rule in India, providing both entertainment and a thought-provoking narrative.
