Chariots of Fire is a 1981 British historical drama film directed by Hugh Hudson. Set in the early 1920s, the story revolves around two main characters: Eric Liddell and Harold Abrahams.

Eric Liddell, played by Ian Charleson, is a devout Christian and the son of Scottish missionaries in China. He has a strong belief that running is a talent given to him by God and refuses to compromise his religious principles. Despite being one of the fastest sprinters in the British Empire, Liddell faces a dilemma when he learns that one of his qualifying races is scheduled to be held on a Sunday. Citing the Sabbath as a day of rest, Liddell refuses to compete despite immense pressure to do so.

Harold Abrahams, portrayed by Ben Cross, is a Jewish athlete experiencing discrimination due to his faith. He faces social barriers and is often excluded from prestigious clubs and events due to anti-Semitism and class bias. Determined to prove himself, Abrahams dedicates himself to becoming the fastest sprinter in Britain. He hires Sam Mussabini, played by Ian Holm, a professional trainer, to help him improve his technique.

As the film progresses, it alternates between the stories of Liddell and Abrahams, showcasing their individual struggles and determination. Liddell faces opposition from his family and even a potential disqualification from the Olympics due to his refusal to compromise his religious beliefs. Meanwhile, Abrahams faces prejudice and ostracization, fueling his determination to achieve victory and prove his worth.

The narrative follows both athletes as they train rigorously, facing personal challenges and moments of doubt. The film also explores the personal lives of Liddell and Abrahams. Liddell contemplates his future as a missionary in China, while Abrahams struggles to balance his love for running with his neglected relationship with his girlfriend, portrayed by Alice Krige.

The climax of the film takes place at the 1924 Paris Olympics, where both Liddell and Abrahams compete. The film culminates in an iconic and intense race between the two, highlighting their vastly different motivations and approaches to running.

Chariots of Fire delves into themes of faith, determination, discrimination, and the pursuit of personal goals. The film won four Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and remains a beloved classic that showcases the triumph of the human spirit.
