In The Magician, Dr. Vogler and his troupe of performers, including his wife Manda (played by Ingrid Thulin) and the shady Mr. Spegel (played by Gunnar Björnstrand), arrive in Stockholm, where they are invited to perform for the royal court. However, the skeptical Dr. Vergérus (played by Erland Josephson) believes that Dr. Vogler is a fraud and decides to expose him.

As the performance begins, Dr. Vergérus and a group of experts closely observe and analyze Dr. Vogler's tricks, trying to determine the secret behind his mesmerism and potions. As Dr. Vogler's act progresses, doubts start to arise, and various incidents occur that question the legitimacy of his supernatural abilities.

Simultaneously, Dr. Vergérus becomes infatuated with Sara (played by Bibi Andersson), a young woman in love with the married but unhappy actor, Fredrik (played by Lars Ekborg), who is part of Dr. Vogler's troupe. This subplot adds a layer of complexity as Dr. Vergérus uses his power and authority to manipulate those around him.

Throughout the film, the line between reality and illusion becomes blurred, with Bergman exploring themes of identity, truth, and the power of belief. As the battle of wits intensifies between Dr. Vogler and Dr. Vergérus, both characters are pushed to their limits, forcing them to question their own beliefs and motives.

The Magician is a thought-provoking film that delves into the intricacies of human nature and the contrasting forces of reason and irrationality. Bergman's masterful direction, combined with powerful performances and stunning black and white cinematography, creates a visually striking and intellectually stimulating exploration of deception and the unknown.
