In the movie "The Fan," Gil Renard, portrayed by Robert De Niro, is an obsessive fan of the San Francisco Giants baseball team. Renard becomes ecstatic when the Giants pay Bobby Rayburn, played by Wesley Snipes, a record-breaking $40 million to lead their team to the World Series. Renard sees Rayburn as his idol and devotes himself entirely to supporting him.

However, things take a drastic turn when Rayburn falls into a deep and prolonged slump, resulting in the worst performance of his career. Consumed by his obsession and desperate to see his favorite player regain his former glory, Renard becomes increasingly disturbed and unhinged.

As Rayburn's performance continues to decline, Renard believes that he knows the key to help him break out of his slump. He starts to intrude upon Rayburn's personal life, attending his son's Little League games and becoming overly involved. Renard even goes as far as breaking into Rayburn's house, stealing his game equipment, and manipulating his personal relationships.

Driven by his delusions and intense devotion, Renard's actions become increasingly dangerous and threatening. He escalates his efforts to sabotage anyone who he perceives as standing in the way of Rayburn's success, including teammates and coaching staff. Renard's behavior becomes more and more unhinged as he rationalizes that he must do whatever it takes, even if it means resorting to murder, to ensure Rayburn's return to greatness.
