Oklahoma! is set at the turn of the 20th century in the Indian Territory (now the state of Oklahoma). The story follows the romantic journey of two young cowboys, Curly McLain and Jud Fry, who both vie for the affections of Laurey Williams, a spirited farm girl.

The film begins with the inhabitants of a small Oklahoma farm getting ready for a box social, where eligible bachelors bid on homemade food baskets prepared by local women. Laurey, however, is conflicted about attending the social with Curly, as she also has feelings for the brooding and menacing Jud, who works as a farmhand. Despite her reservations, Laurey agrees to attend the box social with Curly.

Meanwhile, a subplot in the film follows the blossoming romance between Will Parker, a cowboy in love with Ado Annie, and Ali Hakim, a peddler who is pursued by Ado Annie's father. Ado Annie, however, is a fickle young woman and also falls for a traveling Persian salesman named Ali Hakim.

As the box social approaches, tensions rise between Curly and Jud, with Curly slowly realizing the dangerous obsession Jud has for Laurey. Determined to win Laurey's heart, Curly sings the iconic song "Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin'" to express his love. Laurey, torn between her feelings for both men, ultimately chooses Curly and accepts his marriage proposal.

On the day of the wedding, Jud confronts Curly in a smokehouse and in a fit of anger, Curly provokes Jud into a fight, resulting in Jud's accidental death. The community is shocked by the tragic event, but Curly is eventually acquitted for self-defense. The film concludes with a joyous finale celebrating the newfound love and unity of the community.

Oklahoma! explores themes of love, rivalry, and the challenges of building a community. With its memorable songs and vibrant dance numbers, the film captures the spirit of the American West while delving into the complexities of human relationships.
