In the movie Air, set in the near future, Earth's breathable air has become extremely scarce and toxic due to some catastrophic event. Almost all of humanity has vanished, leaving only a few survivors chosen to be part of a controlled experiment in suspended animation. These survivors, known as "sleepers," are kept in specialized chambers designed to sustain their lives until the air becomes safe for breathing again.

The film primarily follows two engineers, Bauer and Cartwright, who are assigned the crucial duty of maintaining the sleepers' chambers and monitoring their vital signs. Bauer is a seasoned engineer who has been in charge for years, while Cartwright is a young and inexperienced technician.

As time passes, the two engineers struggle not only with the immense pressure of preserving the last hope for mankind but also with their own deteriorating mental states. Their isolation within the facility and the constant exposure to the toxic outside air begins to take a toll on their sanity. They find solace in conversations and debates about the state of the world, their role in it, and the ethics of the experiment they are involved in.

However, their situation becomes even more dire when the facility's systems start to malfunction. Power outages, equipment failures, and oxygen leaks create a race against time for Bauer and Cartwright to fix the issues before the sleepers succumb to the toxic air. As they struggle with technical challenges and their own sanity, they also discover that they are not entirely alone in the facility.

Through their interactions and shared experiences, the engineers form a bond and rely on each other for support. They question the purpose of their duties and contemplate the morality of their own existence, raising existential questions about the value of preserving mankind in a desolate world.

The film builds tension as the engineers fight against their own demons, the deteriorating conditions in the facility, and the potential extinction of humanity. The climax of the movie revolves around their final desperate attempts to save the sleepers, as well as themselves, from an impending disaster.

In the end, the engineers must confront difficult choices and make sacrifices in their quest to fulfill their duty and preserve what little hope remains for humanity in a world devoid of breathable air.
