In the movie Die Nibelungen: Siegfried, the story begins with Siegfried, an adventurous young prince and skilled warrior who hails from the kingdom of Xanten. Siegfried has a desire for glory and dreams of becoming the greatest hero in the land.

After hearing tales of the beautiful princess Kriemhild, Siegfried decides to travel to the kingdom of Burgundy and the capital city Worms to ask for her hand in marriage from her brother, King Gunther. On his way to Worms, Siegfried encounters a fearsome dragon named Fafnir, who guards a treasure of immense power known as the Nibelung gold.

Siegfried courageously battles and defeats the dragon, acquiring the Nibelung gold as a reward. He takes a small fragment of the gold, known as the Tarnhelm, which grants the wearer the ability to shape-shift and become invisible. Siegfried continues his journey to Worms, now with the dragon's treasure in his possession.

Arriving in Worms, Siegfried impresses King Gunther and his council with his heroic deeds and warrior skills. However, the king is initially hesitant to give his sister's hand to a stranger. Gunther, anxious to prove himself as a worthy king and win the heart of Queen Brunhild of Iceland, proposes a deal to Siegfried. Gunther agrees to allow Siegfried to marry Kriemhild if he helps him win Brunhild's hand in a contest of strength and bravery.

With his invisibility and strength, Siegfried assists Gunther in defeating Brunhild's formidable challenges. Under the ruse of Gunther's achievements, Brunhild is won over, and Gunther marries her. Meanwhile, Siegfried marries Kriemhild as promised.

However, their newfound happiness doesn't last long as a seed of jealousy is planted in Brunhild's heart. She becomes suspicious when she witnesses Siegfried's superior strength compared to Gunther during their wedding night. Brunhild confronts Kriemhild and accuses Siegfried of helping Gunther win her hand deceitfully.

Intrigued by Brunhild's claims, Kriemhild confronts Siegfried, and he confesses his assistance in Gunther's victory. Feeling betrayed, Kriemhild allows Brunhild access to the Tarnhelm, and Brunhild uses it to expose Siegfried's identity as the true hero of their previous exploits.

Betrayed and angered by her husband's deception, Kriemhild betrays Siegfried by revealing his only vulnerable spot, his back where a leaf had fallen while he bathed in the dragon's blood and became invulnerable. Hagen, a trusted advisor to Gunther, kills the unsuspecting Siegfried using this knowledge. The news of Siegfried's death devastates Kriemhild, and she swears vengeance upon her husband's killers.

This sets the stage for the sequel film, Die Nibelungen: Kriemhild's Revenge, where Kriemhild seeks to avenge Siegfried's death, leading to a tragic and epic clash between the kingdoms of Xanten and Burgundy.
