Before the Devil Knows You're Dead is a gripping crime drama directed by Sidney Lumet. The film follows two brothers, Andy and Hank Hanson, played by Philip Seymour Hoffman and Ethan Hawke respectively, who hatch a plan to rob their parents' jewelry store in order to solve their financial problems.

Andy, the older brother, is a successful businessman struggling with mounting debts due to his drug addiction and expensive lifestyle. Meanwhile, Hank, the younger brother, is also in dire financial straits, dealing with child support payments and an unhappy marriage.

The brothers enlist the help of a low-level criminal, Bobby Lasorda, played by Brian F. O'Byrne, to carry out the robbery. They plan to commit the crime during the day, assuming their parents will have the insurance to cover any losses and no one will get hurt.

However, their plan quickly unravels when the robbery goes awry and their mother, Nanette Hanson, portrayed by Rosemary Harris, is accidentally killed by Bobby. Shocked and filled with guilt, the brothers must now scramble to cover up their involvement and avoid implicating themselves in their mother's murder.

As the investigation into the robbery and murder intensifies, the film delves into the lives of the various characters, unravelling secrets, deceit, and betrayals within the Hanson family. Their father, Charles, played brilliantly by Albert Finney, becomes consumed by grief and the quest for justice.

As the brothers attempt to keep their involvement a secret, tensions rise between them, culminating in a climactic and tragic confrontation. The consequences of their actions and the weight of their guilt threaten to tear their family apart.

Before the Devil Knows You're Dead expertly weaves together multiple narrative threads, highlighting the moral and emotional complexities of the characters involved. The film explores themes of greed, desperation, and the dark side of familial relationships, leaving audiences on the edge of their seats until the very end.
