The City Without Jews, originally a satirical novel by Hugo Bettauer, is set in the fictional Republic of Utopia, where the government decides to expel the Jewish population because of the economic crisis. Leo Strakosch, who is engaged to Counsellor Linder's daughter, is among the exiled Jews. In a bold and clandestine move, he returns to Utopia to show the society the wrongness of their anti-Semitic prejudice.
As Leo navigates the city, he encounters a variety of characters who hold different viewpoints on the expulsion of the Jews. Some are sympathetic to the plight of the exiled Jews, while others remain steadfast in their anti-Semitic beliefs. Through his actions and interactions, Leo aims to confront the people of Utopia with the consequences of their prejudice and discrimination.
The story unfolds against the backdrop of a society in turmoil, with tensions rising as the consequences of the expulsion become increasingly evident. As the plot progresses, the film raises important questions about prejudice, discrimination, and the impact of societal divisions. Ultimately, the film delivers a powerful message about the dangers of intolerance and the need for compassion and understanding.
