In the movie The Grifters, the young short-con grifter referred to is Roy Dillon, played by John Cusack. Roy is an experienced con artist who makes a living by running small-scale scams. However, his life takes a dramatic turn when he gets beaten up by a thug for attempting to cheat at a local bar.

Roy's criminal mother, Lilly Dillon (played by Anjelica Huston), enters the picture after this incident. Lilly is a seasoned con artist herself and has a complicated relationship with her son. Roy harbors resentment towards his mother for abandoning him as a child, and their reunion is filled with tension and distrust.

While dealing with his injured hand from the beating, Roy becomes involved with a vivacious and unpredictable young lady named Myra Langtry (played by Annette Bening). Myra is also a con artist and quickly becomes infatuated with Roy. Together, they start working on bigger and riskier cons.

As Roy navigates his complicated relationships with his mother and Myra, he finds himself torn between loyalty and self-preservation. His emotional vulnerability becomes further entangled when Myra suggests they pull off a major con involving a wealthy bookmaker, Bobo Justus (played by Pat Hingle).

As the plan unfolds and tensions rise, Roy must use his wit and cunning to navigate the dangerous world of grifting.
