After crash-landing on the desolate planet, astronaut Taylor, accompanied by two fellow crew members, Dodds and Landon, find themselves in a world completely different from what they know. The planet's intelligent inhabitants are apes, who have evolved to become the dominant species, while humans have regressed into a primitive state and are treated as mere animals.

Taylor and his crew members are captured by the apes and separated. Taylor, being the most rebellious and defiant of the humans, is taken to a research facility led by a compassionate chimpanzee scientist named Dr. Zira. Intrigued by Taylor's intelligence and ability to speak, Zira becomes determined to prove that humans are not mindless creatures but possess intelligence and potential.

During Taylor's time at the research facility, he develops a bond with Zira and her partner, Cornelius, who share his interest in understanding the true nature of humans. They learn about his spaceship and the existence of a forbidden area called the "Forbidden Zone," which holds historical secrets that the apes actively suppress.

Taylor's beliefs are further challenged when he encounters Nova, a human woman who displays signs of intelligence and empathy. This sparks hope within him and strengthens his resolve to escape and find answers about the planet's past.

Taylor, Zira, and Cornelius embark on a perilous journey to the Forbidden Zone, defying the law and facing opposition from the ape society. On reaching their destination, they discover ancient ruins and evidence that humans once ruled over apes. The revelation shocks them and forces them to question the foundation of their beliefs.

As tensions rise between the apes and the humans, Taylor finds himself caught in the middle of a power struggle between the conservative and progressive factions of the ape society. With the help of his newfound allies, Taylor attempts to bring about an understanding between the intelligent apes, the primitive humans, and himself.

In a climactic twist, Taylor eventually discovers that he never left Earth; he has been on a post-apocalyptic Earth all along. The desolate landscape and the dominance of apes were a result of a catastrophic event that wiped out human civilization and paved the way for ape evolution.

Realizing the irony of their situation, Taylor utters the iconic line, "You maniacs! You blew it up! Damn you! Damn you all to hell!" He comes to terms with the fact that humanity's own destructive nature led to this grim future.

The movie ends with Taylor standing on a desolate beach, devastated by the realization that humanity's brutality and disregard for the planet ultimately led to its own downfall.
