In the beautifully scenic Greek island of Kalokairi, the independent and vibrant single mother, Donna Sheridan, owns a small hotel named Villa Donna. Donna has sacrificed much to raise her spirited young daughter, Sophie, all on her own. As Sophie's wedding day approaches, she becomes curious about her unknown biological father and, without her mother's knowledge, mails wedding invitations to her three potential fathers, each one an ex-lover of Donna from 20 years ago.

The three men arrive on the island, each oblivious to the fact that they might be Sophie's father. First, there's Sam Carmichael, a wealthy American architect, who once shared a passionate romance with Donna. Then, there's Harry Bright, a British banker and thrill-seeker, and lastly, Bill Anderson, a laid-back Australian writer and traveler. Sophie hopes that by meeting each of these men, she will be able to recognize her true father and have him walk her down the aisle on her big day.

As the wedding draws nearer, chaos ensues as Donna is confronted with her past and her ex-lovers. Confusion, nostalgia, and unresolved feelings resurface among Donna and her former flames. Meanwhile, Sophie finds herself forming connections with all three potential fathers. She tries to spend time with each of them, inquiring about her mother's previous life and her own paternity.

Tensions rise as Donna grapples with her complicated emotions towards her past relationships, unsure whether to forgive, rekindle, or move on from her failed romances. She is also concerned about the impact these reappearances may have on her relationship with Sophie.

With the help of her mother's best friends and former bandmates, Tanya and Rosie, Sophie manages to keep her secret hidden from Donna. They bond with the three potential fathers and reminisce about their wild youth. All the while, a summer romance unfolds between Sophie and her fiancé, Sky.

As the night of the wedding approaches, emotions run high, and secrets threaten to unravel everything. Donna discovers the truth behind Sophie's intentions and feels betrayed, thinking her daughter doesn't trust her. Sophie, however, explains that her only intention was to have her father present on her special day.

In the end, all three potential fathers vow to stand beside Sophie during the wedding ceremony, regardless of who her biological father may be. At the wedding itself, Sophie realizes that it is the love between her and her mother that matters the most, rather than the identity of her father. Donna also realizes she needs to let go of the past and embrace the happiness she has in the present.

"Mamma Mia!" is a heartwarming and feel-good musical filled with joyous ABBA songs, laughter, romance, and an exploration of the complexities of love and family bonds.
