In the film "Ugetsu," directed by Kenji Mizoguchi, set in 16th century Japan, Genjuro and his friend Tobei are poor peasants making a living by making and selling earthenware pots. Despite a sage's warning against profiting from war, they decide to take their pots to a nearby village where there is demand due to ongoing conflicts.

Genjuro is driven by his ambitions for wealth and desires to sell his pottery to the wealthy during the war. Meanwhile, Tobei dreams of becoming a samurai to gain honor and status. Their wives, Miyagi and Ohama, worry about the dangers of war and the consequences their husbands' aspirations may bring.

As they arrive in the village, they encounter a group of soldiers who appreciate their craftsmanship and purchase their pots. However, the village is suddenly attacked by marauding soldiers, and chaos ensues. In the confusion, Genjuro encounters a beautiful and mystical noblewoman named Lady Wakasa, who is accompanied by her elderly servant, Ukon.

Lady Wakasa becomes infatuated with Genjuro and seduces him, inviting him to stay in her magnificent mansion. Genjuro is bewitched by her beauty and falls deeper into an otherworldly romance. He becomes oblivious to the reality of war and the pain he causes his wife, Miyagi, who is desperately searching for him.

Meanwhile, Tobei seizes the chaotic opportunity and steals a samurai's armor, pretending to be a samurai himself. He joins the chaos and ruthlessly indulges in violence, attempting to fulfill his dream of becoming a respected warrior.

As Genjuro becomes more entangled with Lady Wakasa, he starts to realize that she and her mansion have a dark secret. It is revealed that she and her servant, Ukon, are ghosts, longing for human contact. Genjuro's life is endangered as he becomes trapped in the haunting mansion.

Tobei's delusions of grandeur also come crashing down when he realizes that being a samurai is not as honorable and glorious as he imagined. He is faced with the harsh realities of war and confronts the tragic consequences of his choices.

Eventually, reality begins to unravel for both Genjuro and Tobei. They witness the devastation and destruction caused by the war, realizing the futility of their pursuits. Genjuro manages to escape the clutches of Lady Wakasa's mansion, and both he and Tobei return to their wives, traumatized and remorseful.

The film concludes with Genjuro and Tobei's return to their wives, who have endured great suffering in their absence. It serves as a poignant reminder of the destructive power of greed and ambition during war, as well as the importance of valuing love, family, and the simplicity of life.
