In X-Men: First Class, the story begins in 1944 during World War II, where a young Charles Xavier (later known as Professor X) meets a young Erik Lensherr (later known as Magneto) in a concentration camp in Poland. Charles discovers Erik's mutant ability to control metal and promises to help him harness his powers. However, their friendship is cut short when Erik's desire for revenge against Sebastian Shaw, a powerful mutant who killed his mother, consumes him.

Jumping ahead to 1962, Charles Xavier is now a brilliant professor and telepathic mutant, while Erik Lensherr has become a skilled and deadly master of magnetism. They find themselves on opposite sides, with Charles dedicated to promoting peaceful coexistence between mutants and humans, and Erik seeking to eliminate anyone who opposes mutant supremacy.

As the story progresses, Charles is approached by the CIA to help avert the Cuban Missile Crisis, as Shaw, now a mutant terrorist and leader of the Hellfire Club, plans to provoke a nuclear war in order to allow mutants to rise to power. Charles forms a team of young mutants, including the shape-shifting Mystique (Raven Darkholme), the teleporting Nightcrawler (Kurt Wagner), the energy-absorbing Darwin (Armando Muñoz), the super-fast Quicksilver (Peter Maximoff), and others.

Through their training and missions, Charles and Erik's ideological differences become more apparent, leading to inevitable conflicts. While Charles strongly believes in using their powers for good and in the possibility of humans and mutants coexisting peacefully, Erik experiences firsthand the prejudice and hatred humans have for mutants, pushing him further towards his radical ideology.

The team eventually faces off against Shaw and his allies, including Emma Frost (the White Queen) and Azazel. They engage in intense battles and confrontations, all while Charles tries to convince Erik that revenge and violence are not the answer. However, Erik's rage and desire for justice push him further away from his former friend.

In the climactic final battle, Charles ends up paralyzed after a confrontation with Erik, which further deepens their animosity. Erik, on the other hand, fully embraces his role as a mutant extremist and renames himself Magneto, leading to the birth of the Brotherhood of Mutants. Charles, determined to protect and guide mutants, establishes his school as a safe haven for young mutants and declares himself Professor X.

X-Men: First Class sets the foundation for the X-Men franchise by exploring the complex relationship between Professor X and Magneto, as well as delving into the struggles faced by mutants as they navigate a world that fears and rejects them.
