In the movie "Across the Pacific," Rick Leland is indeed court-martialed and dismissed from the army, but it is revealed that he was actually a spy for the United States. His true motive for boarding the Japanese ship bound for the Orient is to gather information and thwart a Japanese plot.

While on the ship, Leland becomes acquainted with Doctor Lorenz, a German national who is suspected of engaging in espionage activities. Leland befriends Lorenz to gather information about his activities and potentially uncover any Japanese connections.

Additionally, Leland also forms a romantic relationship with Alberta Marlow, an attractive traveler on the ship. Initially, it may seem like his motive for getting close to her is purely based on her physical attractiveness. However, as the plot unfolds, it is revealed that Marlow is also involved in the espionage plot, and Leland's relationship with her becomes instrumental in gathering crucial information to foil the Japanese plans.

Throughout the movie, Leland navigates a complex web of espionage, romance, and loyalty, as he strives to protect his home country from the impending Japanese threat.
