The movie Day of Wrath is set in a small Danish village in the early 1600s, during a time when accusations of witchcraft were prevalent and religious persecution was rampant.

Anne, the young woman whose mother was thought to be a witch, lives a life of fear and isolation due to her family's tainted reputation. She is married to Pastor Absalon, an older and kind-hearted man who saved her mother from being burned at the stake as a witch.

Despite Absalon's previous act of mercy, his overbearing mother persuades him not to intervene when Marte, an old woman in the village, is accused of witchcraft. Anne, however, feels sympathy for Marte and begins to question the righteousness of the witch trials that are sweeping through the community.

As the plot progresses, Absalon's son returns home and becomes attracted to Anne. This complicates matters further, as their forbidden love further entangles Anne into her family's history with witchcraft. Her family destiny seems inescapable, and she faces the possibility of being unjustly accused herself.

The tension in the village rises as more people are accused and executed for witchcraft. Anne's internal struggle between loyalty to her family and her growing empathy for the accused witches becomes more pronounced. She grapples with the fear of being discovered, as well as the guilt she carries for harboring sympathy towards those being persecuted.

Eventually, the truth about Anne's mother's involvement with witchcraft is uncovered, leading to a confrontation that will test Anne's loyalty, love, and bravery. The film explores themes of religious fanaticism, fear, love, and the power of societal pressure in an era plagued by superstition and persecution.
