"The Fortress" is a historical Korean epic film set in the 17th century during the turbulent period of the Qing invasion of Joseon. The movie primarily revolves around the desperate defense of King In-jo and his court in the mountain fortress of Namhan against the mighty Qing horde.
As the movie begins, the powerful Khan of the Jurchen tribe of Manchuria, who later becomes the first ruler of the Qing dynasty, launches a full-scale invasion against the Joseon kingdom. With the Qing forces closing in on the capital city of Hanyang (present-day Seoul) and King In-jo's court in danger, a decision is made by the king to retreat and seek refuge in the mountain fortress of Namhan. The fortress, situated deep within treacherous mountains, is believed to be a nearly impregnable stronghold capable of withstanding prolonged sieges.
As the Qing horde relentlessly attacks the fortress, King In-jo and his loyal courtiers, including his loyal advisor Heungseon Daewongun, face numerous challenges. Rivalries, internal power struggles, and the harsh mountain conditions test their unity and resolve. Inside the fortress, they fiercely discuss strategies, debate matters of loyalty, and struggle with the moral dilemmas that arise during times of war and crisis.
