Dr. Markway invites a group of individuals who have all had paranormal experiences to join him in investigating Hill House. The participants include Eleanor Vance, a shy young woman who recently lost her mother; Theodora, an artist with psychic abilities; and Luke Sanderson, the future inheritor of the mansion.

As soon as they arrive at Hill House, strange occurrences begin to unfold. Doors mysteriously close and lock, chill winds blow through the halls, and unsettling noises echo in the night. The group also discovers a room in the house that appears to have been specifically designed to be terrifying, with strange angles and grotesque statues.

Eleanor, who has always felt isolated and unwanted, starts to develop a strong connection to the house. She becomes plagued by vivid nightmares and hears voices calling her name. As the investigation continues, Eleanor becomes increasingly obsessed with the idea of staying permanently at Hill House, feeling that the house wants her to be a part of it.

The experiences at Hill House intensify, with Eleanor feeling both frightened and strangely comforted by the supernatural occurrences. The group begins to question whether Hill House is just haunted or if it possesses a malevolent force that is targeting Eleanor specifically.

As tensions rise, Eleanor's mental state becomes more fragile. She becomes convinced that she is meant to be a part of the house forever and starts to isolate herself from the others. Dr. Markway becomes increasingly concerned for her well-being and tries to convince her to leave, but Eleanor refuses.

In a climactic moment, Eleanor's attachment to Hill House reaches its peak. The house seems to come alive, shaking violently and trapping her inside. Theodora, Luke, and Dr. Markway attempt to rescue her, but the paranormal forces prove too strong.

In the end, Eleanor dies inside Hill House, her spirit becoming trapped within its haunted walls. The remaining members of the group escape, realizing the true malevolence that resides within the mansion. Dr. Markway's research proves the existence of ghosts, but at a great cost.

The Haunting is a psychological horror film that explores the themes of grief, isolation, and the power of the supernatural. It delves into the haunting effects of a place saturated with darkness and how it can manipulate and destroy even the most fragile souls.
