In the movie Sucker Punch, the young girl's name is Babydoll. After the death of her mother, she is left in the care of her abusive stepfather, who sees her as a constant reminder of his late wife. When Babydoll attempts to defend herself against his advances, he frames her for the murder of her younger sister.

As a result, Babydoll is sent to Lennox House, a mental institution for troubled girls. There, she is scheduled to undergo a lobotomy in five days, leaving her desperate to escape. To cope with her traumatic reality, Babydoll retreats into an imaginary world within the mental institution. In this alternate reality, she envisions the institution as a brothel, and the girls become dancers and performers entertaining clientele.

Within this fantasy, Babydoll meets four other girls: Sweet Pea, Rocket, Blondie, and Amber, who become her allies. Together, they devise a plan to escape the mental institution. In order to achieve their freedom, they need to collect five items: a map, fire, a knife, a key, and the fifth item, which Babydoll must discover herself.

To retrieve these items, Babydoll dances for her captors, distracting them while her allies search for and gather the necessary objects. While performing these dances, Babydoll again enters another layer of reality, fighting battles against mechanical enemies, dragons, and other supernatural forces. These battles represent Babydoll's bravery and determination, symbolizing her fight for freedom. Each dance sequence intertwines with the girls' journey in the mental institution.

As their plan progresses, Babydoll befriends a male patient named Blue Jones, who turns out to be the head orderly and the man responsible for her impending lobotomy. Their friendship helps Babydoll gain leverage and insight into the inner workings of the mental institution, further aiding their escape plan. However, Blue becomes suspicious of Babydoll and her allies, leading to increased tension and danger for the girls.

Ultimately, Babydoll discovers that the fifth item she needs to escape is a sacrifice, and she decides to give up her own life to save Sweet Pea, allowing her to escape while Babydoll distracts the asylum staff. Just as Sweet Pea successfully escapes, Babydoll is taken to be lobotomized. However, it is revealed that the lobotomy was a deliberate act orchestrated by Blue Jones to silence her.

The movie ends with Sweet Pea successfully leaving the mental institution and the remaining girls taking revenge on Blue. The final scenes suggest that Babydoll's sacrifice has inspired Sweet Pea to lead a new life, no longer hindered by the walls of the institution. The movie leaves it up to interpretation whether Babydoll's alternative reality was her way of coping or if it actually contained elements of a deeper truth about their situation.
