In the movie "Changeling," set in 1928 Los Angeles, Christine Collins, played by Angelina Jolie, is a devoted mother whose nine-year-old son, Walter, mysteriously goes missing. After anxiously searching for months, the police finally locate a boy claiming to be Walter and return him to Christine. Overwhelmed with joy, she embraces the boy despite her initial doubts about his identity.

However, Christine soon notices stark differences in the boy's behavior and physical appearance, leading her to believe that this child is an imposter. Desperate for answers and justice, Christine confronts the police with her suspicions, demanding further investigation and help in finding her real son. The police, led by Captain J.J. Jones, played by Jeffrey Donovan, dismiss her claims and accuse her of being a delusional, neglectful mother.

Refusing to give up, Christine's persistence puts her at odds with the corrupt LAPD, who not only refuse to acknowledge their mistake but also conspire to discredit her. In an attempt to silence Christine and maintain their reputation, Captain Jones manipulates her into a psychiatric evaluation where she is falsely diagnosed with delusion and committed to the psychiatric ward of a hospital.

While institutionalized, Christine encounters other mistreated women who have been institutionalized for challenging societal norms or simply being inconvenient. She befriends a fellow patient, Carol Dexter, played by Amy Ryan, who helps her navigate the harsh and oppressive conditions within the asylum.

Meanwhile, a brave and determined radio preacher named Gustav Briegleb, portrayed by John Malkovich, takes up Christine's cause and exposes the LAPD's corruption through his radio show. Together, they fight for justice and the truth surrounding Walter's disappearance, gaining public support and media attention.

As Christine remains confined, she gains hope when a boy named Arthur, who closely resembles Walter, enters the asylum. She believes him to be her son, but her claims are once again dismissed by the authorities. However, this new development serves as a catalyst for Christine and her allies to uncover a larger conspiracy within the police department involving the abduction and murder of several children.

With the help of determined lawyers, Christine takes her fight to the courtroom, where she faces off against the LAPD and exposes their attempts to silence her. The truth gradually emerges, demonstrating how the police allowed a dangerous serial killer, known as the Wineville Chicken Coop Murders, to go undetected and wrongfully imprisoned many innocent women in order to divert attention from their own failures.

In a gripping climax, Christine's resilience and unwavering pursuit of justice reveal the extent of the LAPD's corruption, leading to the downfall of Captain Jones and the exposure of the truth about Walter's disappearance. Ultimately, Christine's battle against the unjust system highlights themes of maternal love, determination, and the power of truth in the face of adversity.
