"55 Days at Peking" is an epic historical film set in 1900 during the Boxer Rebellion in China. The movie revolves around the siege of the International Compound, located in Peking (now known as Beijing), where diplomats, soldiers, and civilians from various nations find themselves trapped.

The film begins by introducing Major Matt Lewis (played by Charlton Heston), an American officer who has been assigned to train the Chinese army. He arrives in Peking with his young son just as the Boxer Rebellion erupts. The Boxers, a secret society of Chinese nationalists who resent foreign influence in their country, rise up against the foreign presence in Peking.

As the rebellion intensifies, the Boxers target and attack the International Compound, seeking to expel all foreigners. The compound serves as a safe haven for diplomats, soldiers, and their families from nations like the United States, Britain, France, and Germany. Despite their nationality and conflicting interests, the compound's residents must join forces to defend themselves against the overwhelming odds.

Inside the compound, tensions emerge due to the competing factions and national rivalries. However, faced with a common enemy, they must put aside their differences and work together. Major Lewis becomes one of the key leaders and takes charge of organizing the defense of the compound.

The besieged residents face numerous challenges, including scarcity of supplies, constant attacks, and the threat of traitors within their ranks. Meanwhile, the Empress Dowager Cixi, supported by her generals, secretly sympathizes with the Boxers and subtly encourages their actions against the foreigners.

Days turn into weeks, and the residents of the compound endure an arduous ordeal. Help is delayed as international forces struggle to coordinate their efforts to reach Peking. However, relief finally arrives at the end of the 55-day siege.

As the film reaches its climax, a combined force of international troops storms Peking to rescue the trapped diplomats and soldiers. The central characters, including Major Lewis, his son, and other key figures, manage to survive the siege and are ultimately rescued.

"55 Days at Peking" showcases themes of unity, resilience, and the human spirit in the face of adversity. It depicts the historical events of the Boxer Rebellion and the sacrifices made by those who defended the International Compound against overwhelming odds, showcasing their bravery and determination.
