In the movie Close-Knit, the little girl named Tomo is initially left alone and neglected by her mother, who is always preoccupied with her own life. Feeling unwanted and abandoned, Tomo decides to seek refuge at her uncle Makio's apartment. Makio, who works long hours, is initially unsure about taking care of Tomo but eventually agrees.

To Tomo's surprise, she not only finds warmth and acceptance in her uncle's home but also discovers that he is in a loving relationship with his transgender girlfriend, Rinko. Rinko is kind-hearted, nurturing, and provides a safe haven for Tomo, who quickly becomes fascinated by Rinko's femininity and understanding of womanhood.

As Tomo spends more time with Makio and Rinko, she becomes deeply attached to them and begins to understand gender diversity and the challenges faced by transgender individuals. She witnesses the prejudice and discrimination Rinko encounters in society, but also realizes the strength and resilience required to overcome such obstacles.

Despite the heartwarming environment at home, Tomo still struggles with her emotions and feelings of abandonment. However, Rinko's unwavering love and support gradually help her open up and heal the wounds caused by her neglectful mother. Additionally, Rinko introduces Tomo to knitting—a hobby that not only brings them closer but also serves as a metaphor for the interconnectedness and acceptance within their unconventional family.

Tomo's newfound happiness is tested when her mother returns, attempting to re-establish her role as a parent. Fearful of her mother's neglectful tendencies resurfacing, Tomo resists her efforts, ultimately strengthening her bond with Makio and Rinko. In the process, they create a bond that surpasses blood ties and exemplify the profound love that can be found in chosen families.

Close-Knit explores themes of acceptance, the non-traditional definition of family, and the strength that can come from diverse relationships. It showcases the power of love in overcoming adversity, while shedding light on the experiences and challenges faced by transgender individuals in Japanese society.
