In Footlight Parade, James Cagney plays Chester Kent, a talented and energetic producer who is facing financial difficulties due to the decline of the American stage musical. Determined to revive his career, he decides to shift his focus to producing live musicals for cinemas.

Chester's plan is to create 'prologues,' short live musical performances that would precede the main feature film. This innovative idea proves to be successful, attracting large audiences and leading to a surge in profits. However, Chester soon finds himself facing a series of obstacles that threaten his production company, Kent Productions.

Firstly, his workers become disgruntled, feeling overworked and underpaid. Union disputes and strikes add to his troubles, causing tensions to rise within the company. Alongside labor issues, Chester has to deal with money problems and the constant pressure from his demanding and greedy ex-wife, played by Joan Blondell.

Together with his loyal secretary Nan, portrayed by Joan Blondell, and his talented but reluctant songwriter and friend Scotty, played by Dick Powell, Chester works tirelessly to overcome these challenges. The trio comes up with intricate and mesmerizing dance sequences, choreographed by the renowned Busby Berkeley, to captivate audiences.

As the difficulties intensify, the plot takes a dramatic turn when Chester's business partners betray him. Facing bankruptcy and the potential closure of Kent Productions, Chester must find a way to outmaneuver his enemies and save his company. In a last-ditch effort, he masterminds a grand finale featuring an elaborate underwater musical sequence, hoping to secure a lucrative contract that would turn his fortunes around.

With his determination, creativity, and the support of his team, Chester manages to overcome the obstacles and brings success back to Kent Productions, restoring his reputation as a formidable producer. The movie concludes with a spectacular showcase of the "Shanghai Lil" number, leaving audiences and characters alike in awe.

With its vibrant musical numbers, charismatic performances by the cast, and stunning choreography by Busby Berkeley, Footlight Parade showcases the challenges and triumphs of a producer striving to make his mark in the cinema industry amidst personal and professional obstacles.
