In The Fighting Kentuckian, John Breen (played by John Wayne) is a member of the Kentucky militiamen who fought in the War of 1812. While passing through Alabama, he meets and falls in love with Fleurette De Marchand (played by Vera Ralston), a French exile who is part of a group planning to settle in the West.

However, Breen soon discovers that there is a conspiracy to cheat the French exiles out of their land claims. The scheme is led by the landowner, Blake Randolph (played by John Howard), who aims to take advantage of the vulnerable immigrants and swindle them out of their property rights. Determined to protect Fleurette and her people, Breen resolves to expose and foil Randolph's plan.

Breen joins forces with Fleurette's fellow exiles, as well as a Native American chief named Jean Deaux (played by Hugo Haas). Together, they navigate through the challenges and dangers of the untamed West, confronting hostile individuals and encountering various perils along the way.

Throughout their journey, Breen's bravery and resourcefulness are tested as he combats the corrupt elements threatening Fleurette's community. Along with outwitting Randolph, he also faces off against a violent gang led by Blake's brother, Henri (played by Grant Withers), who becomes one of Breen's most formidable adversaries.

As Breen and his allies engage in daring adventures and face numerous obstacles, their ultimate goal remains to ensure justice for the French exiles and secure their rightful claim to the land they seek to settle on. The Fighting Kentuckian combines action, romance, and a sense of honor as it narrates the tale of John Breen's efforts to protect his love and her fellow immigrants from forces seeking to exploit and manipulate them.
