In the small town of Del Rio, Texas, the story begins with Llewelyn Moss, a local hunter stumbling upon a drug deal gone wrong in the desert. He finds several dead bodies, a briefcase containing $2 million, and a large stash of heroin. Recognizing the danger and opportunity, Moss takes the money and flees the scene.

Unbeknownst to Moss, he has attracted the attention of Anton Chigurh, a relentless and emotionless hitman hired to recover the stolen money. Chigurh is a man without morals, who uses a captive bolt pistol as his weapon of choice, indiscriminately killing anyone who stands in his way. He sets out on a relentless pursuit of Moss, leaving a trail of death and destruction in his wake.

Meanwhile, local sheriff Ed Tom Bell, who is near retirement, becomes involved in the investigation and tries to track down both Moss and Chigurh. Bell is a wise but disillusioned lawman who struggles with the increasing violence and lack of morality in the world around him.

As Moss evades Chigurh, he becomes increasingly aware of the danger he is in. He tries to outsmart the hitman, but Chigurh proves to be an incredibly cunning and skilled adversary. Moss seeks refuge in various motels and attempts to hide the money, but Chigurh always seems to be just one step behind him.

Throughout the course of the film, Moss and Chigurh engage in a deadly cat-and-mouse game, with the tension escalating as the body count rises. Moss's only hope for survival is to outwit and outmaneuver Chigurh, but doing so proves to be nearly impossible.

At the same time, Bell reflects on the bloodshed and chaos unfolding before him. He grapples with the notion that he is no longer equipped to deal with the ever-increasing violence and depravity in society. Bell is haunted by the realization that he is living in a world that he no longer understands or can protect.

The plot takes several unexpected turns, with Moss's actions having far-reaching consequences. Each character's fate ultimately contributes to the larger theme of the movie: the loss of innocence, the decline of traditional values, and the growing sense of hopelessness in a changing world.
