In Night of the Kings, directed by Philippe Lacôte, the story unfolds within the walls of MACA prison, located in Abidjan, the economic capital of Ivory Coast. The film follows the main character, an aging prisoner known as Black Beard, who rules over the inmates as their de facto leader.

Facing his own mortality, Black Beard decides to uphold a prison tradition known as the "story" ritual, inspired by the legendary storyteller Scheherazade. In this tradition, a chosen prisoner must keep the others entertained by telling stories throughout the night until dawn.

Black Beard selects a young pickpocket as the storyteller for the night, and it is through his narrative that the audience is immersed in the haunting tale of the Zama King. As the young inmate weaves his story, the boundaries between reality and fiction blur, transporting both the inmates and the viewers into a mesmerizing world of fantasy and folklore.

The Zama King is a mythical figure in Ivorian culture, known as the embodiment of power and leadership. However, the Zama King is on the brink of death, and the various tribes in his kingdom vie for control amidst uncertainty and chaos. Within this unstable environment, political intrigue, personal aspirations, and supernatural forces collide, creating a narrative filled with tension, suspense, and unexpected twists.

As the young inmate's storytelling continues, the lines between the story and the events unfolding in the prison become increasingly blurred. The power dynamics among the inmates shift, alliances are formed, rivalries emerge, and the story takes on a life of its own, affecting both the storyteller and his captivated audience.

Night of the Kings explores the themes of power, storytelling, tradition, and the human spirit's ability to seek solace and escape through narratives. Through the interplay between the prison's reality and the magical world of the Zama King, the film delves into the prisoners' quest for freedom, both physically and mentally, while highlighting the transformative power of storytelling in even the most oppressive of circumstances.
