Poppy Moore, a rebellious 16-year-old girl from Malibu, California, finds herself in a challenging situation when her father, who she relies on for everything, announces that he is getting remarried. Determined to drive her potential stepmother away, Poppy throws a wild party at her house, resulting in significant damage.

Frustrated with Poppy's behavior, her father makes the drastic decision to send her to an English boarding school called Abbey Mount. Poppy resents being forced into this unfamiliar environment and views her father's actions as a betrayal, believing he will come to her rescue and bring her back to Malibu.

Upon arriving at Abbey Mount, Poppy's rebellion intensifies. She is uncooperative and disrespectful towards the strict headmistress, Mrs. Kingsley, and her academic rival and prefect, Harriet Bentley. Poppy quickly befriends her roommate, Kate, who helps her adjust to the school's rules and guides her through the intricacies of the English school system.

As Poppy continues her attempts to get expelled, she involves the other girls in various mischievous schemes. Together, they bring chaos to the orderly world of Abbey Mount, undermining the school rules, and creating a sense of freedom within their tightly controlled environment.

Throughout her time at Abbey Mount, Poppy's interactions with other students and authority figures gradually open her eyes to deeper issues affecting her own life. She connects with Mrs. Kingsley's troubled daughter, Freddie, who has been expelled from the school, and learns about the consequences of her reckless behavior.

As Poppy's friendship with Freddie grows, she starts to question her selfish motives for wanting to be expelled. She also develops a romantic interest in Freddie's older brother, Freddie Kingsley, who challenges her rebellious nature in unexpected ways.

However, when Poppy finally realizes that her father isn't coming to rescue her, she begins to genuinely engage with the school community. She immerses herself in academics, participating in school events, and even joins the lacrosse team. As Poppy embraces her new life, she begins to shed her rebellious persona and discovers her own self-worth.

The transformation is noticed by Mrs. Kingsley, who appreciates Poppy's growth and starts to advocate for her at the school disciplinary committee, just as Poppy faces severe consequences for her actions.

In a climactic turn of events, Poppy receives an acceptance letter from her dream college in America. Determined to prove herself and finish what she started at Abbey Mount, she chooses to stay until the end of the school year, knowing that would be her greatest accomplishment.

As the academic year concludes, Poppy has won the respect and admiration of her peers and teachers, including Mrs. Kingsley. She reconciles with her father, understanding his intentions behind sending her to England. Poppy leaves Abbey Mount as a changed person, having learned the value of friendship, responsibility, and perseverance.

The movie Wild Child explores themes of personal growth, the significance of community, and the redemption that can be found through embracing new experiences. Poppy's journey ultimately illustrates that sometimes, getting expelled isn't the ultimate goal—it's about discovering oneself and finding a sense of belonging.
