In Ghosts of Mississippi, the story revolves around the real-life events that took place in 1963, following the assassination of prominent civil rights leader Medgar Evers. The film delves into the aftermath of the murder and focuses on the efforts to bring the killer, Bryon De La Beckwith, to justice.

The movie portrays the initial trial of Beckwith, which ends with two hung juries due to racial bias and intimidation of witnesses. Bobby DeLaughter, an ambitious and idealistic young district attorney, becomes determined to seek justice for Evers and his family. He forms an alliance with Myrlie Evers, Medgar's widow, who has been tirelessly fighting for justice for her husband's killer to be brought to trial.

As Bobby becomes more deeply involved with the case, he undergoes a personal transformation. He starts to realize the magnitude of the civil rights movement and the deep-rooted racism that has plagued Mississippi for decades. This newfound understanding compels Bobby to fight against the systemic racism prevalent in the state and to bring Beckwith to trial for the third time, even after 30 years have passed.

The film explores Bobby's journey as he deals with personal and professional challenges, including his strained relationship with his wife and the threats he faces from those who want to protect Beckwith. Along the way, Bobby's determination to seek justice leads him to uncover new evidence and reexamine the case from different angles, eventually leading to Beckwith's conviction.

Ghosts of Mississippi not only sheds light on the assassination of Medgar Evers and the trial of his killer but also examines the underlying racial tensions during that time in Mississippi. The movie showcases the resilience and strength of individuals fighting for justice, as well as the long-lasting impact that one man's murder had on the civil rights movement.
