In the movie "Rhymes for Young Ghouls," the story revolves around Aila, a Mi'gMaq teenager living on the Red Crow Reservation in 1976 Canada. The film explores the dark and troubling history of residential schools that were set up to assimilate Indigenous children.

Aila's protagonist character has endured her fair share of pain and suffering at the hands of the sadistic Indian agent, Popper. Following the death of her mother, Aila takes on the responsibility of caring for her younger brother, Tyler. As the sole guardian, she tries to protect him from the horrors of the local residential school, which has become a place of immense abuse and violence.

In order to cope with the challenges and pain she has experienced, Aila immerses herself in her community's underground economy of drug-dealing. She forms a close relationship with her drug-dealing uncle, Burner, who becomes like a father figure to her. They operate a profitable marijuana business together, which they use to take control of their lives amidst the chaos and oppression they face.

However, Aila's path to independence encounters obstacles when Popper, the Indian agent responsible for her trauma, demands payment of "truancy tax" - an absurd and exploitative fee for children who have not attended residential school. To avoid payment, Aila resorts to a clever and daring plan to rob the Indian Affairs office. Her ultimate objective is not only to escape the clutches of the Indian agent but also to gain revenge for the suffering she and other children have endured.

As Aila prepares for her heist, the story delves into her complex relationships with her friends, family, and the members of her community who have all been affected by the oppressive policies imposed on them. She discovers that revenge, while initially satisfying, may not offer the healing and closure she seeks.

"Rhymes for Young Ghouls" is a powerful and emotional film that sheds light on the deep scars left by the residential school system in Canada. It explores themes of survival, family bonds, resilience, and the quest for justice amidst a backdrop of cultural genocide.
