Katie Arneson, the protagonist of the movie White Lie, is an admired and popular undergraduate student at a prestigious university. She deliberately fabricates a cancer diagnosis as a means to receive monetary and emotional support from her friends, family, and community. Katie's deceit becomes a complex juggling act as she tries to keep her secret hidden and struggles with the guilt and fear of being exposed.

As Katie immerses herself deeper into her lie, she almost becomes a local celebrity, with fundraisers and donations pouring in to support her alleged medical treatments. Her web of deception not only affects those who genuinely care for her but also impacts her own mental state. She constantly lives in the fear of being discovered, making it difficult for her to truly enjoy the attention and support she receives.

Katie's relationship with her girlfriend, Jennifer, also starts to suffer under the weight of her secret. Jennifer, unaware of the fabricated diagnosis, becomes increasingly concerned and confused by Katie's behavior. As Jennifer begins to question the validity of Katie's illness, their once-strong bond starts to unravel.

Meanwhile, a persistent journalist, whom Katie initially dismisses as insignificant, catches wind of inconsistencies in her story. Driven by a desire to expose the truth, the journalist starts digging deeper, uncovering the cracks in Katie's facade. As the journalist gets closer to the truth, Katie's anxiety and paranoia escalate, further alienating her from those around her.

Throughout the movie, White Lie delves into the psychological toll that maintaining such an elaborate lie takes on Katie. She is torn between her desperate need for the support and attention she receives and the growing burden of guilt. Ultimately, Katie must confront the consequences of her actions and decide whether the truth can ever outweigh the damage caused by her deceit.
