In the movie American Dreamer, the protagonist, Jack Miller, is desperate and struggling to make ends meet. Divorced and barely able to support himself, he takes on a job as a part-time chauffeur for a low-level drug dealer named Miguel Sanchez.
As Jack spends his days driving Miguel around town, he becomes more aware of the lavish lifestyle that Miguel and his family enjoy. Consumed by jealousy and driven by his dire financial situation, Jack concocts a risky plan to kidnap Miguel's child, Sofia, in hopes of extorting a large ransom from her wealthy father.
Struggling with the decision but seeing no other way out, Jack meticulously plans the abduction, doing research, and gathering information on Miguel's routine and security measures. One night, he executes his plan and successfully kidnaps Sofia.
As the days pass, Jack finds himself conflicted by guilt and uncertainty. He realizes the consequences of his actions and the potential danger to the innocent child. Simultaneously, he is also tormented by the fear of being caught and facing the wrath of Miguel, who is known for his brutal and ruthless nature.
Meanwhile, Miguel is frantic upon discovering Sofia's disappearance. He immediately suspects foul play but cannot involve the police due to his involvement in illegal activities. Desperate to find his daughter, he puts pressure on his network and starts making inquiries among his criminal associates.
As time runs out and pressure mounts, Jack begins to develop a genuine bond with Sofia. In the midst of their captivity, he becomes a surrogate father figure to her, providing care and comfort while still fearing the consequences of his actions. The connection they form challenges Jack's initial intentions and forces him to question whether the end justifies the means.
As the search for Sofia intensifies, Jack finds himself caught between two worlds. He must decide whether to reclaim his humanity by releasing Sofia safely or to proceed with his plan and extract the ransom. The moral dilemma and emotional turmoil push him to the brink, and he must confront the repercussions of his choices head-on.
In a tense and heart-wrenching climax, Jack ultimately comes clean to Sofia about his intentions and plans to return her to her father. Facing the consequences of his actions, Jack must confront an enraged Miguel and confront the extent of his own desperation. The film leaves audiences questioning the lengths they would go to achieve their own version of the American Dream.
