The Stendhal Syndrome is a 1996 psychological horror film directed by renowned Italian filmmaker Dario Argento.

The young policewoman in focus is Anna Manni (played by Asia Argento, the director's daughter), a detective in the anti-rape department of the Florence Police. Anna suffers from a psychological disorder called Stendhal Syndrome, which causes her to experience intense hallucinations and physical reactions when admiring beautiful pieces of art.

While on a mission to apprehend a notorious serial rapist and killer, Alfredo Grossi (played by Thomas Kretschmann), Anna finds herself drawn into a dark and twisted game of cat and mouse. After tracking him to an art gallery, she experiences an overwhelming bout of Stendhal Syndrome when witnessing a famous painting. In a disoriented state, she becomes an easy target for Alfredo, who kidnaps and brutally assaults her.

Anna manages to escape but is deeply traumatized by the attack. Despite her mental and emotional turmoil, she remains determined to bring Alfredo to justice. However, her obsession with capturing him begins to consume her, leading her down a path of insanity. As her hallucinations become more frequent and severe, she struggles to distinguish between reality and her distorted perceptions.

Throughout the film, Anna continues her pursuit of Alfredo, often finding herself trapped in harrowing situations. She meets a man named Marco (played by Marco Leonardi), who becomes both an ally and a romantic interest, providing emotional support in her darkest moments.

As the story progresses, Anna's mental state deteriorates further, blurring the lines between hunter and prey. The film explores themes of obsession, trauma, and the fragility of the human psyche. The Stendhal Syndrome delves into the psychological horrors faced by both the protagonist and the audience as they are submerged in a gripping tale of terror and madness.
