In the movie Move Over, Darling, the plot follows the complicated love triangle that develops between Nicholas Arden (played by James Garner), Ellen Wagstaff Arden (played by Doris Day), and Bianca Steele (played by Polly Bergen).

After being stranded on a South Pacific island for five years, Ellen is finally brought back to Los Angeles by the Navy. Determined to surprise her husband Nicky, she requests that the Navy keeps her arrival a secret. However, she soon discovers that Nicky has moved on with his life, having Ellen legally declared dead and remarried to Bianca.

Ellen, devastated by Nicky's remarriage, decides to track him down and confront him on her own terms. She goes undercover, using her maiden name and disguising her true identity. Meanwhile, Nicky and Bianca, unaware of Ellen's return, head to the Monterrey resort for their honeymoon, the same place where Nicky and Ellen celebrated their initial honeymoon.

At the resort, Ellen discovers that Nicky is staying there with Bianca. She tries to maintain her cover but finds it increasingly difficult when she repeatedly runs into Nicky. There are numerous comedic mishaps and misunderstandings as Ellen tries to hide her true identity from her husband.

Slowly, Nicky starts to notice odd coincidences and become suspicious of Ellen's look-alike behavior. As the film progresses, Ellen must continually dodge detection while trying to win Nicky back and expose her true identity. Along the way, the audience is treated to comedic situations, heartfelt moments, and romantic escapades.
