In the movie "Ned Kelly," based on the true story of Australia's most infamous outlaw, the plot follows the life of Ned Kelly, a young Irish-Australian bushranger, as he becomes a symbol of resistance against the oppressive authorities during the late 19th century.

The film begins by depicting the harsh and impoverished conditions in which Ned Kelly (played by Heath Ledger) and his family live. Frustrated with the unfair treatment they receive at the hands of corrupt police officers, Ned's father is arrested for stealing a pig, leaving their family in dire straits. This event sets in motion the chain of events that lead Ned to become an outlaw.

As Ned grows older, he becomes increasingly involved in criminal activities, forming a gang that includes his brother Dan (Laurence Kinlan), close friend Joe Byrne (Orlando Bloom), and Steve Hart (Philip Barantini). The gang starts robbing banks and redistributing the stolen wealth among the poor and oppressed, earning them a reputation as modern-day Robin Hoods.

However, their actions do not go unnoticed by Constable Alexander Fitzpatrick (Geoffrey Rush), a corrupt officer seeking personal gain. Fitzpatrick harasses Ned's family and accuses Ned's mother, Ellen (Kris McQuade), of attempted murder, leading to her imprisonment. In retaliation, Ned and his gang ambush a police convoy and burn down the Glenrowan Inn, making their presence and defiance known to the authorities.

With the country in an uproar and the authorities launching a manhunt for the gang, Ned, Dan, Joe, and Steve have no choice but to go into hiding in the dense Australian bush. They establish a secret base and continue their criminal activities, while also planning a way to get their names cleared and bring justice to their family.

The gang faces numerous challenges and close calls as they navigate through the treacherous landscape, their reputation growing among the people as folk heroes fighting against injustice. Along the way, the movie delves into Ned's complex personal life, exploring his love for Julia Cook (Naomi Watts), the daughter of a wealthy landowner who sympathizes with the gang's cause.

Eventually, the authorities close in on the Kelly Gang, leading to a climactic showdown in Glenrowan. Wearing homemade metal armor, Ned and his gang engage in a final, desperate battle against heavily armed police officers. The movie portrays their last stand as a tragic yet heroic act, with the Kelly Gang ultimately being overwhelmed by the sheer number of opponents.

In the aftermath, Ned Kelly is captured and sentenced to death by hanging. Despite their undeniable legacy as outlaws, the Kelly Gang's fight against oppression and their unwavering loyalty to each other and their cause remain immortalized in Australian history.
