In the movie Pan's Labyrinth, set in 1944 Spain in the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War, young Ofelia is brought to live in a rural military outpost with her pregnant mother Carmen, who has remarried the sadistic Captain Vidal. Ofelia's real father died in the war.

Feeling isolated and trapped in her new environment, Ofelia escapes into a nearby labyrinth where she encounters a faun named Pan. Pan tells Ofelia that she is a princess from the underground kingdom, and in order to prove her royalty, she must complete three tasks before the full moon.

The first task involves retrieving a key from the belly of a giant toad. As Ofelia steals the key, she is caught by Vidal's housekeeper, Mercedes, who secretly supports the rebel fighters opposing the captain's regime. Mercedes promises to help Ofelia in her endeavors.

For her second task, Ofelia is given a magical chalk by Pan, which allows her to create a portal into a magical realm. There, she is instructed to retrieve a dagger from the lair of the Pale Man, a terrifying creature that awakens and feasts on those who eat from his banquet. Despite disobeying Pan's warning to not consume anything, Ofelia takes a grape and narrowly escapes the Pale Man's wrath.

Meanwhile, Vidal becomes more brutal and oppressive, torturing rebels and civilians, including Mercedes' brother Pedro. Mercedes and other rebels plan to assassinate Vidal, ultimately turning the outpost into a battleground.

As Ofelia proceeds to her third task, she must bring her baby brother into the labyrinth and exchange him for the realm's throne. However, realizing the true consequences of following Pan's instructions, Ofelia refuses to harm her brother, valuing her family above all.

In the climax, Vidal discovers Mercedes' allegiance to the rebels and fatally wounds her. Ofelia confronts Vidal and attempts to escape back into the labyrinth, carrying her brother. Vidal fatally shoots Ofelia, but Mercedes, on her deathbed, kills Vidal before the rebels overrun the outpost.

In the final scene, Ofelia is shown lying lifeless on the ground, with a small trickle of blood. Her spirit is then seen reuniting with her father in the underworld, where he commends her bravery and welcomes her as a princess. The film ends on a bittersweet note, leaving the viewer to ponder the power of imagination and the sacrifices made for one's beliefs.
