In the futuristic world of Soylent Green, the Earth is severely overpopulated, resulting in limited resources and food scarcity. People rely heavily on a company called Soylent Corporation, which produces various food products to sustain the population. The world is also heavily polluted, and the climate has significantly deteriorated.
The story follows Detective Frank Thorn, a New York City police officer assigned to investigate a high-profile murder case. A wealthy businessman named William R. Simonson is found dead in his luxurious apartment. As Thorn digs deeper into the case, he uncovers a complex conspiracy involving the state secrets of Soylent Corporation.
While investigating, Thorn meets Simonson's gorgeous and mysterious companion, Shirl, who becomes a vital connection to understanding the truth. Thorn befriends an elderly academic named Solomon "Sol" Roth, who used to be a researcher before his work was dismissed by the government. Roth, aware of the dangerous secret, reveals to Thorn that there is much more to Soylent Green than meets the eye.
Through his investigation, Thorn discovers that Soylent Green, the latest and most popular food product from Soylent Corporation, is made from human remains. The company has been recycling and using deceased humans as a source of food to feed the ever-growing population. This shocking revelation exposes the company's true motives and reveals the horror behind their supposedly revolutionary foodstuff.
As Thorn becomes dangerously close to uncovering the truth, he attracts the attention of powerful government agents, including the corrupt and influential Joseph C. Simonson, William Simonson's father. These agents, fearful of the secret being revealed, want Thorn eliminated, leading to several intense and thrilling chase sequences.
In the midst of this chaos, Thorn strives to reveal the truth to the population, hoping to ignite a revolution against Soylent Corporation and the government's manipulation of resources. However, his efforts are met with great resistance as the powerful forces behind the conspiracy attempt to silence him at all costs.
Towards the climax of the film, Thorn is ultimately captured by the government agents and brought before the board of Soylent Corporation, where he is shown the horrifying truth behind the manufacturing process of Soylent Green. Despite the overwhelming despair, Thorn manages to leak the information to his friend Roth and others, initiating a public outcry.
The film concludes with images of widespread protest and rebellion against the corrupt government and Soylent Corporation. The dystopian society, previously unaware of the grim reality behind their main food source, begins to rise up, demanding change and justice.
Soylent Green is a thought-provoking sci-fi thriller that explores themes of overpopulation, corruption, and the consequences of unchecked consumerism. The movie serves as a warning about the potential dark future of humanity if it continues to exploit resources without regard for the environment and ethical implications.
