Archy Hamilton and Frank Dunne, two young Australian men, become friends in Western Australia in the early 20th century. Archy is a talented sprinter with dreams of representing Australia in the Olympics, while Frank is a rugged and adventurous stockman. As World War I breaks out, both men are filled with patriotic fervor and decide to enlist in the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) together.

After undergoing rigorous training, Archy and Frank are sent to the Mediterranean theater of war and eventually find themselves on the Gallipoli peninsula in Turkey. The ANZAC soldiers, along with British and French troops, are participating in the Dardanelles Campaign, a strategic operation aimed at capturing Constantinople (now Istanbul) and gaining control of the Turkish Straits.

As they arrive in Gallipoli, Archy and Frank experience the harsh reality of war. They witness the suffering of their comrades and the devastating effect of the artillery bombardments. Despite the brutal conditions, they hold onto their youthful optimism and maintain a strong friendship.

Archy becomes the battalion's runner, responsible for delivering orders between the front lines and headquarters, making use of his incredible speed. Meanwhile, Frank serves as a infantryman, enduring the horrors of trench warfare. Both men encounter bravery, loss, and the true horrors of war firsthand.

As the months pass, Archy receives news that back home, the Australian Light Horse regiment, which he had been planning to join after the war, will be deployed to Egypt. Feeling homesick and desperately wanting to see his family again, Archy secretly decides to abandon his current post and reunite with his loved ones.

On the eve of a major offensive, Frank discovers Archy's plan and confronts him. He tries to convince Archy to stay and fulfill their duty as soldiers. Archy is torn between his desire to return home and his sense of loyalty, but ultimately chooses to stay and fight alongside Frank.

The next morning, the ill-fated Battle of the Nek begins. The ANZAC forces are ordered to charge the heavily fortified Turkish positions, resulting in a catastrophic loss of life. Archy and Frank participate in the charge, but tragedy strikes as they are both caught in the devastating machine-gun fire. In a heartbreaking scene, Archy dies in Frank's arms.

The film ends with a poignant scene at Archy's funeral, where Frank—now a broken man—stands alongside Archy's grieving family. The film serves as a powerful commentary on the futility and tragedy of war and the human cost it exacts.
