In the movie "Me, Myself & Irene," Charlie Baileygates is a Rhode Island State Trooper who has been dealing with a multiple personality disorder throughout his life. His disorder is represented by two distinct personalities. The first personality, Hank, is crazy, aggressive, and has a tendency for violent outbursts. The other personality, Charlie, is more friendly, laid back, and often struggles to assert himself.

Charlie's life takes an unexpected turn when he is assigned to escort a woman named Irene Waters out of town after she is involved in a hit-and-run incident. During their journey, Charlie and Irene start to develop a connection, and soon both of Charlie's personalities find themselves falling in love with her. However, they also find themselves in a chaotic love triangle as they fight for her affections.

As the plot thickens, it is revealed that Irene's ex-boyfriend, a shady organized crime figure named Casper, is involved in some dangerous activities. Charlie realizes that he must protect Irene from Casper and his henchmen who are after her for witnessing a criminal act.

Throughout the film, both Charlie and Hank continue to battle for Irene's attention. Charlie desperately tries to regain control over his life by seeking help from Dr. Dana Appleton, a psychiatrist who specializes in his disorder. However, Hank becomes jealous and does everything he can to sabotage Charlie's progress.

Amidst the chaos, and with Charlie's increasing inability to take his medication due to various comedic mishaps, the line between both personalities becomes increasingly blurred. The situation reaches its climax as Hank takes over Charlie's body, becoming determined to save Irene from the imminent danger she faces.

In a climactic showdown, Hank fights off the criminals and rescues Irene, displaying his fearless and violent side. However, the person Irene truly cares for is Charlie, the more gentle and authentic personality. It is through Charlie that she finds solace and ultimately falls in love.

In the end, Charlie and Irene start a relationship, with Charlie working to integrate both personalities and find a balance within himself. The movie concludes with the hope that Charlie will be able to navigate his life, love, and the challenges of his condition while remaining true to himself.
