In the year 2023, mutants and humanity are on the brink of extinction due to the unstoppable robot killers known as Sentinels. The remaining X-Men, including Professor Charles Xavier and Magneto, devise a desperate plan to prevent this dystopian future. They decide to send Wolverine's consciousness back in time to the year 1973, where they hope to prevent the pivotal event that led to the creation of the Sentinels.
Wolverine's younger self encounters a younger Charles Xavier, who is now disillusioned and has abandoned his powers due to the trauma of losing his mutant students. In order to convince Charles to help, Wolverine embarks on a mission to rescue the younger Magneto from a highly secure prison beneath the Pentagon. With the help of Peter Maximoff, a mutant with superhuman speed, they successfully break Magneto out of his confinement.
