The Other Side of Hope is a Finnish drama film directed by Aki Kaurismäki. The story revolves around two main characters: Wikström, a middle-aged Finnish restaurateur, and Khaled, a Syrian refugee seeking asylum in Finland.

Wikström, tired of his monotonous life, decides to leave his alcoholic wife and purchase a struggling restaurant. Meanwhile, Khaled has just arrived in Finland after stowing away on a coal freighter. He is desperate to seek asylum and reunite with his missing sister, who they were separated from during their journey to Europe.

Khaled's situation is bleak. His asylum application is denied, and he ends up on the streets, facing constant harassment from racist locals and the threat of deportation. However, his luck changes when he crosses paths with Wikström. The restaurateur takes pity on Khaled and offers him a job at his restaurant, despite Khaled's lack of proper documentation.

As their friendship deepens, Wikström learns about Khaled's past and his dreams of finding his sister. With a dash of dry humor, the film portrays Wikström's attempts to help Khaled integrate into Finnish society. Together, they navigate various bureaucratic obstacles, facing challenges from immigration offices, police officers, and even skinhead gangs.

While Khaled faces constant uncertainty about his future, Wikström's life also undergoes changes. He discovers a destitute Syrian man sleeping in a dumpster behind his restaurant, and they form an unlikely bond. Their stories intertwine as they confront the realities of immigration, bureaucracy, and the human spirit's resilience in the face of adversity.

With its trademark deadpan style, The Other Side of Hope explores themes of empathy, human connection, and the importance of acceptance in an increasingly divided world. It sheds light on the struggles of refugees and the complexities of immigration, while also highlighting the innate kindness and compassion that can exist in unexpected places.
