"First Light" is a 2010 British drama film based on the memoir of the same name by Geoffrey Wellum, a former Royal Air Force (RAF) pilot who served in World War II. The film depicts the experiences of Wellum as a young Spitfire pilot during the Battle of Britain.

The plot follows Geoffrey "Geoff" Wellum, an 18-year-old who joins the RAF in May 1940, driven by a deep sense of duty to defend Britain against the Luftwaffe. Despite his young age, Geoff becomes the youngest Spitfire pilot in the RAF.

After an intensive training period where he hones his flying skills, Geoff is assigned to a squadron where he quickly forms strong bonds with his fellow pilots. They face the constant danger of aerial combat but find solace and camaraderie in their off-duty activities. They frequently enjoy drinks, participate in sports, and indulge in the company of women. Geoff, in particular, finds comfort in his relationship with Sarah, a girl he meets during his time off.

However, as the intense air battles continue, the stress and trauma begin to take a toll on Geoff and his squadron. The constant loss of friends and colleagues, coupled with the constant threat of death, chips away at their mental well-being. Geoff's psychological state deteriorates, as he struggles to cope with the horrors of war.

As time passes, the toll becomes too much, and Geoff's tour of duty comes to an end after 18 grueling months. The film depicts the physical and emotional challenges the young pilot faces throughout his service, portraying both the exhilaration of flying one of Britain's iconic Spitfires and the profound impact war has on his mental health.

"First Light" explores themes of youth, duty, friendship, loss, and the psychological effects of war. It offers an intimate and poignant portrayal of a young man's journey through the trials and tribulations of combat, ultimately highlighting the lasting scars left by the experiences of war.
