In the movie "To Have and Have Not," based on the novel by Ernest Hemingway, the story takes place during World War II in the French colony of Martinique. Harry Morgan, a veteran American fishing boat captain, operates a charter boat out of the island.

Harry, played by Humphrey Bogart, leads a relatively carefree life, taking tourists on fishing trips and occasionally engaging in some smuggling to get by. However, everything changes when he encounters a beautiful woman named Marie "Slim" Browning, played by Lauren Bacall. Slim, a mysterious American who is stuck in Martinique, manages to charm Harry and persuades him to help her escape the island.

Things become even more complicated when Harry's friend, Eddie, entrusts him with a valuable mission. He insists that Harry smuggle French resistance fighters onto and off the island, as they are in desperate need of transportation to continue their operations.

Harry agrees to help after Eddie is killed by the Vichy French police. With the motivation to avenge his friend's death and the allure of Slim's enigmatic charm, Harry becomes deeply involved in the resistance movement. He must navigate the dangerous underworld of spies, double-crosses, and intrigue in order to support the French resistance fighters and protect Slim.

As Harry immerses himself further into the resistance, tensions rise. The Vichy French authorities grow suspicious, and the local German presence intensifies their efforts to uncover and dismantle the resistance network. Harry finds himself in grave danger, torn between his responsibilities as a charter boat captain, a lover, and as a participant in the fight against the occupying forces.

"To Have and Have Not" illustrates the moral dilemmas faced by Harry Morgan as he becomes entangled in the dangerous and unpredictable world of espionage, ultimately revealing the sacrifices individuals make for love, loyalty, and the greater good during wartime.
