In the movie Sleepers, based on the novel by Lorenzo Carcaterra, the story follows the lives of four boys from Hell's Kitchen, New York City - Lorenzo "Shakes" Carcaterra, Michael Sullivan, John Reilly, and Thomas "Tommy" Marcano. The film is divided into two parts - their childhood and their adult lives.

During their teen years in the 1960s, the four friends are inseparable, engaging in petty crimes and mischief around their neighborhood. One day, their seemingly innocent prank of stealing a hot-dog cart goes terribly wrong when it accidentally ends up on the railway tracks, causing an accident that seriously injures a man. As a result, all four boys are sentenced to serve time at the Wilkinson Home for Boys, a brutal and sadistic youth detention center.

While at Wilkinson, the boys' lives become a nightmare as they are subjected to physical abuse and sexual assault by Sean Nokes, a sadistic prison guard. Years later, the adult versions of the boys are shown pursuing different paths - Lorenzo, who had witnessed the abuse but been unable to prevent it, becomes a reporter for a local newspaper; Michael becomes an assistant district attorney; John becomes a lawyer; and Tommy turns to a life of crime, eventually becoming a mobster.

The paths of the four friends cross again when they encounter Nokes, who is now working as a security guard at another facility. Consumed by the desire for revenge, they plan an elaborate scheme to exact justice on Nokes. Lorenzo seeks the help of an older, aging mobster named King Benny, who agrees to help them with their plan.

Devoted to their cause, the friends are determined to expose the widespread corruption within the judicial system that allowed Nokes to commit these atrocities. They reach out to Michael, who reluctantly agrees to help them orchestrate a legal strategy to get Nokes charged for his crimes.

A sensational court hearing takes place as Michael, with the help of John, presents compelling evidence and testimonies from former prisoners of Wilkinson, including the four friends themselves. The trial becomes a high-profile case, drawing significant media attention and public outrage.

As the trial progresses, the boys' past traumas are relived, affecting their relationships, mental well-being, and faith in the justice system. Eventually, the court's decision leads to a shocking twist, forcing the four friends to make a difficult choice – whether to let the legal system take its course or to deliver their own form of justice.

Sleepers delves into themes of friendship, trauma, justice, and loyalty. It explores the devastating effects of abuse on its victims, as well as the profound impact it can have on their lives and choices. The movie raises challenging questions about the lengths one is willing to go for revenge, ultimately grappling with the nature of justice itself.
