In the small town of Lillian, Ohio, a group of friends, led by Charles, decide to spend their summer making a zombie movie using a Super 8 camera. The group includes Joe, the film's makeup artist; Alice, the female lead; Cary, the pyrotechnics expert; Preston, the sound recordist; and Martin, the film's actor. Charles plans to enter their film in a local film festival.
One night, while filming a scene near a train station, the group witnesses a catastrophic train derailment caused by an oncoming truck colliding with the train. Amidst the chaos and destruction, the friends manage to escape with their lives. However, they discover that their camera captured something strange during the accident - an unknown creature escaping from one of the cargo compartments.
