Raimund Gregorius, a Swiss classics professor, is leading a monotonous and solitary life in Bern. One day, he saves a beautiful Portuguese woman, who is about to jump off a bridge. She disappears, leaving her coat behind, in which Gregorius discovers a book by a Portuguese author named Amadeu de Prado.

Intrigued by the book, Gregorius embarks on a journey to Lisbon to learn more about the author and the mysterious woman. He decides to leave everything behind, including his job and his uneventful existence, and impulsively boards the night train to Lisbon.

Once in Lisbon, he starts investigating and meets people who were close to Prado, including his sister, Adriana, and a former resistance fighter, João Eça. Through these encounters, Gregorius delves into Prado's life and the political turmoil of the Salazar regime in Portugal, as well as the personal struggles and loves of the people around him.

As Gregorius immerses himself in Prado's writings and the lives of those who knew him, he begins to question the meaning of his own life and the choices he has made. He becomes obsessed with uncovering the truth about Prado and his tumultuous past, even as it puts him in danger.

The journey takes him to various locations in Portugal and uncovers deep connections between the past and the present, ultimately leading Gregorius to a profound understanding of himself and the world around him.

Night Train to Lisbon is a story of self-discovery, love, and the pursuit of truth, as Gregorius navigates through the complexities of history and human experience, ultimately finding a new direction for his life.
