Pelle the Conqueror is a 1987 Danish-Swedish drama film directed by Bille August, based on the novel of the same name by Martin Andersen Nexø. Set in the late 19th century, the film tells the story of a young boy named Pelle (played by Pelle Hvenegaard) and his father Lasse (played by Max von Sydow).

Upon arriving in Denmark, Lasse and Pelle face the harsh reality of being immigrants and are quickly put to work as farm laborers on the Kongstrup farm. The farm is owned by the strict and cruel Kongstrup family, led by the tyrannical Mr. Kongstrup (played by Axel Strøbye) and his resentful son, Erik (played by Björn Granath).

Lasse, a proud and resilient man, struggles to maintain his dignity in the face of the farm owner's degrading treatment. Pelle, meanwhile, starts attending school and learns to speak Danish, hoping for a better life. However, he is constantly subjected to humiliation and bullying by both the local children and farm workers, who view him as an outsider.

The relationship between father and son forms the emotional core of the film. Lasse, who used to be a boat builder, often tells Pelle stories and tries to impart lessons about life and resilience. Despite the difficulties they face, they find solace in their shared dreams of a brighter future and their determination to better their lives.

As Pelle grows older and becomes more aware of the injustices around him, he gradually becomes involved in workers' rights movements and begins questioning the system that perpetuates their mistreatment. His budding activism leads to clashes with the Kongstrup family and other farm workers who fear punishment for challenging the established order.

Throughout the film, Pelle's spirit and determination are contrasted with the oppressive and class-driven society of the time. His yearning for social justice and his belief in a fairer world drive the narrative forward.

As the story progresses, Lasse's health deteriorates, and he becomes weaker and more dependent on Pelle. The film culminates in a tragic event that forces Pelle to make a decision that will profoundly impact his future. Ultimately, he must choose between his dreams and his responsibilities to his father.

Pelle the Conqueror is a poignant portrayal of the struggles faced by immigrants and the social inequality prevalent in society. It explores themes of resilience, hope, and the sacrifices made in pursuit of a better life. The film received critical acclaim and won the Palme d'Or, the highest prize at the 1988 Cannes Film Festival.
